We are Dee & Kevin Gillett
We met at catering college in Eastbourne aged just 17 and started going out with each other soon after. We married in the November of 1980, (Seems such a long time ago now !!)
We had a dream then, to one day own our own hotel - which we have now achieved.
During the years we have run a couple of restaurants – ‘The Salad Bowl’ in St. James’s Street, Brighton and ‘Fodda’ in the High Street, Shoreham-by-Sea.
Until fairly recently, Dee has run Ratton Secondary School Kitchen (a local school which has over 1200 pupils) been there for 10 years.
Kevin has just changed jobs again, from running the Audi Dealership in Hailsham and then running the Sales Department of a much larger Mercedes-Benz dealership in Brighton. He is now working on his own, helping Car Dealerships with marketing and sales training (making best use of his experience gained over the years).
We have two daughters:-
Joanne is a hairstylist at Nuts Hair Designs in Grove Road, Eastbourne – just up from the Railway Station. She has been there for 5 ½ years after completing her college courses and hopes to run her own salon one day (maybe with mum and dad’s help!
NB. Joanne has just opened her brand new hair salon (Cutting Edge) on the 15th August 2006 at 5 Carlisle Buildings, Carlisle Road, Eastbourne, East Sussex. BN21 2BU Telephone Number: 01323 726 766
So if you fancy having your hair cut, coloured or just pampered - give Joanne a call and book yourself in. You can see the website for the salon by clicking here www.cutting-edge-salon.co.uk
Sarah is at West Rise Nursery where she is working towards achieving her GVNQ in Child Care.
NB. Sarah has now passed her exams and so is now qualified.
We bought the Camelot Lodge Hotel on the 7th January 2005 from the previous owners Carol and Jerome Farrow who were here for 2 ½ year, but it took us nearly a year to reach completion of the purchase from the time our offer was accepted!
We love the beautiful Edwardian building and will be putting into place a plan to upgrade the rooms one by one over the next three years. We have just been inspected by the AA who have given us a 3 Red Diamond rating however with the upgrading work planned for the end of the season (redecoration of rooms and the renewing of shower rooms etc.), we are told that this would move us up to the 4 Diamond quality level – so watch this space.
We have refurbished the Dining Room, redecorated the Lounge & Bar Lounge and changed much of the furniture.
in Bedroom 2 we have renewed the Bathroom suite, tiles and non-slip flooring and in all the rooms they now have radio alarm clocks and we've upgraded the Televisions (all now have integrated CD / DVD players).
All the flat roofing has either just been replaced, or previously been replaced within the last three years.
Rooms 7 & 8 have just been totally refurbished including new ensuite shower facilities, rewired and decorated, just being completed with new carpet and colour co-ordination that we will continue throughout the whole hotel. (we hope you like the new photos of the rooms and purple and gold colour scheme - it looks nicer than it sounds!!!).
We have also put teak furniture in the garden, The fish pond now has an upgraded pump and UV filter with a fountain – so you can now relax in the garden listening to the sound of running water and watching the fish.
We have also gone wireless! so, if you need to stay in contact with your emails, work, family or just want to go onto the internet with your laptop, we now have the technology to enable this (if we can figure out how it works!!!!!) and we don't charge you to use it (even better!!!!).
We were assessed by the AA (after we been here for about 4 months) and given a rating of 3 'red' diamonds (the red diamonds mean that we were in the top 10% in the country) - which we were pleased to receive.
However we have been re-assessed (a year later) by the AA (as the rating system is being made easier for everyone to understand - each establishment is being given a Star Rating) - and we have just been awarded an AA 4 Star Rating !! - we are obviously delighted. So who knows what we will get when we have finished our upgrading work !!!
Room 1 has just been totally refurbished including ensuite corner bath with shower facilities, rewired and decorated. It has just been completed with new carpet and non-slip lino in the en-suite with the same colour co-ordination that we have continued throughout the whole hotel.
Room 6 is currently undergoing refurbishment and in this room a double shower has been incorporated into the en-suite. Again the same colour scheme will be followed.
June 2007 - a letter from the AA tells us that we are to receive a 'Highly Commended Award for Guest Accommodation' (this means that we have achieved a place within the top 10% of our 4 Star rating).
So as you can see - we have been very busy in our first couple of year's here at The Camelot Lodge Hotel.
Our aim at, The Camelot Lodge Hotel, is that we will try to make you feel welcome, relaxed and at 'home' so you will enjoy your stay with us, so much so, that you will wish to return once again and tell your friends !!
Latest - Sarah & Ashley have produced a beautiful baby girl which they have called Eloise born 15th June 2007 (thank you for all the cards and presents given by so many of the guests - you are all so very kind, thank you).
Latest - we are just had the TV aerial upgraded so that all rooms have Freeview channels via their own individual Freeview box in every bedroom.
